Why Japanese Dogs May Live Longer — and What It Could Teach the World

Japan has among the lowest canine obesity rates in the world, the highest rates of daily walking for dogs, and a pet food tradition built on fish protein and portion discipline. Japanese veterinary researchers are now asking: is Japanese dog culture adding years to dogs' lives?

Pochi is sixteen years old. He is a Shiba Inu, which makes him, in human terms, somewhere in his mid-eighties. His owner, Hiroshi Tanaka, a retired schoolteacher from Nerima Ward in north-west Tokyo, walks him twice a day — a short morning circuit of the neighbourhood shrines and a longer evening walk through Shakujii Park. The walks are slower than they used to be, and Pochi's muzzle is white. But he eats his meals with enthusiasm, responds to his name, and manages his daily routine without apparent distress. He is not unusual. Long-lived Japanese dogs — fifteen, sixteen, seventeen years — are sufficiently common that they do not generate the mild astonishment that a dog of that age might in Australia or the United Kingdom.

This is not an anecdote that admits easy statistical comparison. Canine lifespan data varies enormously by study methodology, breed composition, and national context, and international comparisons are notoriously difficult to make rigorously. But the question researchers at the University of Tokyo's Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences and at Nippon Veterinary and Life Science University have been putting to the data — do Japanese dogs live longer, and if so why — is not an empty one. There are specific, measurable features of Japanese dog culture that, in isolation and in combination, are consistent with improved longevity outcomes.

The obesity difference: why it matters most

Canine obesity is the single most studied modifiable risk factor for shortened dog lifespan. A landmark fourteen-year prospective study by Kealy et al., published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association in 2002, followed 48 Labrador Retrievers from puppyhood and found that dogs maintained at a lean body condition score lived a median of 1.8 years longer than their littermates maintained in a slightly overweight condition — a 15 percent increase in median lifespan from caloric restriction alone. The dogs in the lean cohort also had delayed onset of osteoarthritis by approximately two years. No other single environmental intervention in canine health research has produced a larger and more clearly documented lifespan effect.

Against this backdrop, Japan's comparatively low canine obesity rate is significant. The Japan Pet Food Association's nutritional surveys — conducted biennially and based on owner-reported body condition assessment — have consistently found lower self-reported overweight rates than comparable surveys in the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia. The 2021 JPFA survey estimated that approximately 18 percent of Japanese pet dogs were overweight or obese as assessed by their owners, compared with estimates of 40 to 55 percent in the United States (Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, 2022) and approximately 51 percent in the United Kingdom (PDSA Animal Wellbeing Report 2023). The Japanese figure is almost certainly an underestimate — owner-reported body condition tends to understate overweight rates in all countries — but the gap is too large to be entirely attributable to measurement differences.

The fish protein question

Japan's pet food market has historically had a higher representation of fish-based protein sources than comparable markets. This reflects both the domestic human food culture — Japan is one of the world's largest consumers of fish per capita — and the commercial reality that Japanese pet food manufacturers have long incorporated fish byproducts from the country's substantial fishing and aquaculture industry. Popular Japanese pet food brands including INABA, Wanちゃん (Wan-chan), and the Petio group have offered fish-primary product lines that are less common in the Western market's dominant chicken-and-beef orientation.

The nutritional case for fish-based diets in dogs is supported by evidence, with appropriate caveats. Fish is a high-quality protein source with a complete amino acid profile and is generally highly digestible. Oily fish — mackerel, sardine, salmon — are rich in omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (EPA and DHA), for which there is a growing evidence base in dogs showing anti-inflammatory effects, benefits for coat quality, and emerging (though not yet definitive) evidence for cardiovascular and cognitive benefits in ageing dogs. However, fish-based diets are not inherently superior to well-formulated poultry or meat diets for dogs — the nutrient profile of the overall diet matters more than any single ingredient source.

The walking culture: daily physical activity as the longevity constant

If there is one feature of Japanese dog ownership culture that stands out most clearly in the international comparative literature, it is the frequency and consistency of daily walking. The JPFA's survey data has consistently found that Japanese dog owners report significantly higher rates of daily walking than comparable surveys in Western countries. The 2022 JPFA survey reportedly found that 82 percent of dog owners walked their dogs at least once daily, with a substantial proportion walking twice daily — rates that exceed self-reported walking frequency in comparable UK, US and Australian surveys by a significant margin.

Several structural features of Japanese urban life support high walking rates. Tokyo's neighbourhood shrine and temple culture creates a walking infrastructure — winding path networks through residential areas, punctuated by small parks, shrine approaches, and canal-side walks — that provides varied, interesting walking environments within walking distance of most urban homes. The morning shrine visit (sanpai) culture, though declining, provides a social structure around which dog walks organise themselves. The density and walkability of Japanese urban neighbourhoods is high relative to most comparable cities.

University of Tokyo research: what the institutional data shows

The University of Tokyo's Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, based at the Bunkyo Campus in Hongo, has produced research on companion animal health in Japan relevant to longevity outcomes. Japanese veterinary researchers have begun to interrogate whether metabolic syndrome markers — elevated triglycerides, insulin resistance, central adiposity — are less prevalent in the Japanese dog population than in comparable cohorts studied in North American veterinary teaching hospitals, given the structural differences in husbandry practice. This remains an active area of research rather than an established finding. Body size: the universal longevity variable

The clearest and most replicated predictor of canine longevity is body size — specifically, that small and medium-sized dogs live considerably longer than large and giant breeds. The Shiba Inu, at a typical weight of 7 to 11 kilograms, sits at the smaller end of the medium-dog range. Japan's dominant pet dog population is heavily weighted toward small and medium breeds: Toy Poodle, Chihuahua, Miniature Dachshund, Shiba Inu, and Maltese are consistently the most popular breeds in JPFA registration data. This size distribution alone — independent of diet, walking, or any other factor — predicts higher average longevity for the Japanese dog population relative to countries with higher proportions of large-breed ownership.

What Japan does not get right: the hidden risks

The longevity-positive picture has important qualifications. Japan's high urbanisation rate and apartment-dominated housing stock create specific challenges for dog welfare that are distinct from the dietary and exercise story. Several veterinary researchers have noted elevated rates of anxiety-related behavioural disorders in Japanese urban dogs — separation anxiety, noise phobia, and compulsive disorders — that may correlate with both the small-space living environment and the intensity of owner-pet attachment characteristic of the fur-baby culture. An owner who treats a dog as a surrogate child may inadvertently create dependency patterns that are welfare-negative for the dog.

Dental disease rates in Japanese dogs are also a concern. Veterinary dental research consistently shows that small-breed dogs have disproportionately elevated rates of periodontal disease — a finding directly relevant to Japan's small-breed-dominant dog population. The mechanisms are well-established: small breeds have proportionally more dental crowding, and the cultural preference for soft, highly palatable wet food formats does not provide the mechanical cleaning effect of dry food or raw feeding. Whether Japanese dogs live measurably longer than dogs in other wealthy countries remains an open question — the data to answer it definitively does not yet exist. The Dog Aging Project, based at the University of Washington, is building the largest canine longevity dataset in history from a US-based cohort of tens of thousands of dogs, and has indicated interest in international comparisons. Japanese veterinary institutions have expressed interest in comparable longitudinal studies but have not yet launched at comparable scale. Until that data exists, the longevity claim for Japanese dogs is a hypothesis supported by coherent mechanistic logic, not a proven conclusion.

What is not in doubt is this: Japan has assembled, largely by cultural accident rather than deliberate design, a set of husbandry practices — lean feeding, daily walking, small-breed preference, fish-inclusive diet — that the independent evidence base for canine longevity would predict to be beneficial. Pochi, the sixteen-year-old Shiba Inu in Nerima Ward, may simply be lucky. Or he may be the product of a culture that, without knowing it, has been doing the right things all along.
