Whippet
Also known as: Snap Dog
A sleek, elegant sighthound - essentially a small Greyhound - that is gentle, quiet and affectionate indoors yet capable of explosive speed. Whippets are famously easygoing "couch sprinters": low grooming, low barking and content to lounge beside their owners, with one of the cleanest health records of any pedigree breed.
Origin and purpose
The Whippet was developed in 19th-century England, largely by working people, by refining small Greyhounds for rabbit coursing and "rag racing" (sprinting after a lure). The result is a compact sighthound built for acceleration — one of the fastest animals for its size.
Temperament
Kennel authorities describe the Whippet as gentle, affectionate, quiet and undemanding at home — a calm companion that rarely barks — paired with a strong chase instinct outdoors. It is sensitive and responds best to gentle training. Behaviour, as ever, is shaped far more by the individual dog than the breed label (Morrill et al., Science 2022).
Health and longevity
The Whippet is widely regarded as one of the soundest pedigree breeds, with relatively few inherited disorders. Sighthound-experienced veterinary anaesthesia is advisable.

Licensing
Dog registration required under the Rabies Prevention Act (狂犬病予防法): one-time ward/city office registration fee ¥3,000 + annual rabies vaccination tag ~¥550. Microchipping mandatory for dogs sold from breeders/pet shops since June 2022.
Climate & exercise in Osaka
Osaka is humid subtropical; one of Japan's hottest cities in summer (July–August avg 36–37°C peak); typhoon season Aug–Oct; mild winters; Osaka's concrete density intensifies the urban heat island effect. walk before 6:30am or after 7pm in July–September; Osaka's heat island effect keeps night temperatures high — pavement can exceed 50°C at midday in summer. Osaka summers are consistently the hottest of Japan's major cities. Heatstroke risk is extreme in July–September; flat-faced breeds (French Bulldog, Pug, Shih Tzu) are critically at risk. Osaka's Dotonbori and Namba areas trap heat — avoid walking dogs through central commercial districts in summer afternoons.
Parasite prevention
Plan for Heartworm prevention essential May–November (mosquito-season window in Kansai); tick prevention recommended for dogs accessing Minoh Park, Kongo-Katsuragi Quasi-National Park, Rokko Range and Ikoma hills year-round.
