The Kintala Club

WebHeidelberg (Warringal Parklands), north-east Melbourne

A volunteer-run dog training club founded in 1976, training at Warringal Parklands in Heidelberg. Kintala pioneered force-free, positive-reinforcement training in Australia (the Gentle Modern Method of Training); its volunteer instructors are accredited trainers under Victoria's Domestic Animals Act. Runs puppy school (8–14 weeks) through to adult classes and socialisation, plus the Ideal Dogs of Australia program.

A not-for-profit, 100% volunteer-run obedience club in Croydon (William Road) promoting positive-reinforcement training and responsible dog ownership. Weekly Sunday classes from puppy through advanced levels, run by volunteer instructors. A Dogs Victoria-affiliated obedience club serving Maroondah and the outer-eastern suburbs.

The Lost Dogs' Home

Established in 1910, Australia's largest animal shelter, caring for more than 18,000 lost, stray, injured and abandoned dogs and cats each year from its North Melbourne and Cranbourne shelters. Runs adoption programs, a pet-reuniting service, veterinary and behavioural care. The first stop for adopting or reclaiming a lost dog in inner Melbourne.

A volunteer, foster-care-based rescue rehoming dogs (and cats) from pounds across Victoria, with a large and highly engaged Facebook community. Dogs are vet-worked, temperament-assessed and placed in foster homes before adoption. One of the most-followed dog rescue communities in Victoria.

A volunteer-run, non-profit shelter and foster network at 36 Weir Street, Glen Iris, founded in 1985 as a humane alternative to pound euthanasia and an early adopter of no-kill sheltering in Australia. Every dog and cat is desexed, vaccinated, wormed, microchipped, vet-checked and temperament-assessed before adoption.
