Mastiff

One of the largest dog breeds by mass - a gentle, dignified English guardian that is calm, good-natured and deeply affectionate with its family. Quietly loyal and patient, the Mastiff combines a courageous heart with a steady, trustworthy temperament that makes it a remarkable companion.
Origin and purpose
The Mastiff is an ancient British type, used over millennia as a war dog, estate guardian and (less creditably) in blood sports, before being refined into the modern show breed in the 19th century. It was bred above all to be a massive, intimidating but steady guardian.
Temperament
Kennel authorities describe the Mastiff as dignified, good-natured, calm and courageous — devoted to its family and naturally protective without being aggressive when well-raised. It is sensitive and responds best to gentle, consistent training. Its size demands early manners training while it is still liftable. Individual temperament varies more than the breed label suggests (Morrill et al., Science 2022).
Health and longevity
As a giant breed the Mastiff is typically short-lived. Controlled growth, lean weight and breeders who health-test are essential.

No nationwide dog licensing fee; the Rabies Control Act B.E. 2535 (1992) requires annual rabies vaccination for all dogs. Climate & exercise in Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai is tropical; three seasons — hot (Mar-May, 35-38°C), rainy (Jun-Oct, hot and humid with daily storms), cool (Nov-Feb, 25-28°C); no cold season; Bangkok urban heat island intensifies midday temperatures. walk before 7:30am or after 7pm year-round; hot season (March-May) is most critical — pavement in direct sun reaches 55°C+ by 9am; cool season mornings (Nov-Feb) are comfortable from 6am. Bangkok's year-round heat and humidity raise heatstroke risk for brachycephalic breeds (French Bulldog, Pug, Bulldog, Shih Tzu) at any time outside the early-morning window — midday outdoor exercise is genuinely dangerous. Bangkok's urban heat island effect means overnight temperatures rarely drop enough to provide meaningful cooling, so indoor air conditioning is essential for temperature-sensitive breeds.

Plan for year-round heartworm prevention essential (Culex and Aedes mosquitoes active all 12 months; Bangkok drains and khlongs provide year-round breeding habitat); tick-borne disease (Ehrlichia canis, Babesia canis/gibsoni) high risk year-round — Rhipicephalus sanguineus endemic in Bangkok residential areas; annual rabies vaccination legally required (Thailand is NOT rabies-free).
