The Dog That Came from the Monastery

Thailand has given the world two FCI-recognised native breeds, a genomic discovery that rewrites the history of the domestic dog, and a spine mutation so unusual that only three breeds on earth share it. The joyful, scientifically astonishing story of the Thai Bangkaew, the Thai Ridgeback, and why the dogs of Thailand matter to every dog owner on earth.

In the early years of the twentieth century, near a bend in the Yom River in Phitsanulok Province, central Thailand, Luang Puh Maak Metharee — the third abbot of Wat Bangkaew monastery — received a gift. A resident of Bangkaew village had brought him a pregnant female dog. The dog gave birth to four puppies. Those puppies, interbreeding over the following decades with the dogs of the Song people who lived along the river, produced a strain so distinctive — watchful, double-coated, fox-faced, and deeply loyal — that they became first the pride of a province and eventually a national treasure. The Thai Bangkaew Dog, as it is known today, exists because of a Buddhist monk, a village woman, a river, and a story that is now formally inscribed in the records of the Fédération Cynologique Internationale.

Thailand is not a country that exports famous dog breeds the way Germany exports the Shepherd or the UK exports the Retriever. Its native breeds have remained largely unknown beyond Southeast Asia, bred and loved within the country while the global dog market imported French Bulldogs and Poodles. But the genomic story of Thailand's dogs — the science of where they come from, how the ridge mutation travels across three continents, and what the genetic diversity of Thailand's dog population means for the understanding of dog domestication itself — is one of the most scientifically compelling stories in all of canine biology. It begins with the Yom River and a monastery dog, and it ends somewhere near the origins of the domestic dog itself.

The Bangkaew: from the monastery to the FCI

The Thai Bangkaew Dog's origin legend places the founding cross as the abbot's black-and-white female with what the old accounts describe as a wild dhole or jackal — an extinct local wild canid whose identity cannot now be confirmed but whose legacy, DNA analysis has suggested, may include elements consistent with golden jackal ancestry. Whether or not the founding cross was with a wild canid or simply a genetically distinct local dog, the result was immediately recognisable: a medium-sized, square-built Spitz-type with a double coat, an alert fox-like expression, a naturally plumed tail carried over the back, and a territorial confidence that made it invaluable as a guardian of boats, livestock and homes along the Yom.

By the 1980s, the breed was approaching extinction. Selective breeding had become haphazard; the population was small; urban migration was reducing the traditional river-community context in which the dogs had been kept. In 1983, Dr. Nisit Tangtrakarnpong, a veterinarian serving as Phitsanulok's provincial livestock chief, launched the 'Bang Kaew Khuen Thin' preservation programme — 'Returning the Bangkaew to its Homeland' — which began systematic registration and selective breeding. The Kennel Club of Thailand formally recognised the breed in 1993. After a provisional classification in 2011, the FCI granted full definitive recognition on 21 June 2022, making the Thai Bangkaew the second Thai breed — after the Thai Ridgeback in 2003 — to achieve that status.

What the Bangkaew is like to live with

The FCI standard for the Thai Bangkaew describes a dog that is 'alert, intelligent, agile, loyal and watchful' — a description that experienced Bangkaew owners tend to regard as accurate but incomplete. The breed is, by the account of everyone who has lived closely with one, intensely bonded with its primary person, suspicious of strangers in the way of a true guardian breed, and highly vocal — it announces everything, immediately. Its intelligence is accompanied by an independence of mind that makes early socialisation not merely desirable but essential: a poorly socialised Bangkaew can be difficult with other dogs outside the family unit.

The double coat — a soft, dense undercoat beneath a straight, moderately coarse outer coat — is one of the breed's most distinctive features and one of its more counter-intuitive ones: despite its volume, the coat serves as insulation in both directions, providing thermal regulation that has allowed the breed to flourish in central Thailand's climate for over a century. The coat is predominantly white, with patches of lemon, red, fawn, tan, grey, or black on the head, back, and tail base — a colouring that in the breed's home territory around Phitsanulok has remained remarkably consistent, a testament to the effectiveness of the monastery-based selective breeding that established the strain.

The Thai Ridgeback: ancient, isolated, and genetically remarkable

The Thai Ridgeback is an older recognised presence in the international canine world — the FCI granted it recognition in 1993, and the American Kennel Club included it in the Foundation Stock Service in 1997 — but it is the Bangkaew's quieter, more physically dramatic cousin. The Ridgeback is a medium-to-large primitive-type dog from eastern Thailand, specifically the Trat Province region along the Cambodian coast, where its genetic isolation was maintained for centuries by the relative inaccessibility of the area. Historical references to the breed date to the seventeenth century. Population genetics researchers working on Thai dog DNA have estimated the breed's lineage as consistent with thousands of years of continuous presence in eastern Thailand.

The breed was historically associated with Thai royalty and with hunting: it was used to escort carts, hunt prey including wild boar and deer, and guard property. Its temperament reflects this heritage — a primitive, intensely loyal, somewhat cat-like independence that experienced dog owners describe as simultaneously rewarding and demanding. A 2024 genetics study published in Biochemical Genetics by Thai researchers, examining microsatellite markers across the Thai Ridgeback population, found significant genetic diversity and minimal inbreeding — a finding described in the paper's title as 'Small but Mighty,' reflecting the surprising genetic health of what is still a numerically small breed.

The ridge: a mutation that crossed the world

The most scientifically extraordinary fact about the Thai Ridgeback is its dorsal ridge — the strip of reversed hair growing along the spine, from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, that gives the breed its name. Only three dog breeds in the world carry this ridge: the Thai Ridgeback, the Rhodesian Ridgeback of southern Africa, and the Phu Quoc Ridgeback of Vietnam. The ridged trait in all three breeds is caused by the same genetic mutation: a 133-kilobase duplication on canine chromosome 18 that encompasses three fibroblast growth factor genes — FGF3, FGF4, and FGF19 — plus the ORAOV1 gene.

This was established by Mats Andersson and colleagues at Uppsala University in a landmark 2007 study published in Nature Genetics. The finding has profound implications for the historical movement of dogs around the world. The current leading hypothesis is that ridged dogs originated in Southeast Asia — with the Thai and Phu Quoc Ridgebacks as the ancestral type — and were transported to Africa by maritime traders, possibly along Indian Ocean trade routes, at some point between approximately 1,000 and 2,000 years ago, where they interbred with local African dogs to produce what would eventually become the Rhodesian Ridgeback. A dog from the river systems of eastern Thailand may be the ancestor of a breed most people associate with the African savannah.

All three ridged breeds share an identical 133-kb duplication on chromosome 18. The most parsimonious explanation is a single origin in Southeast Asia, with subsequent transport to Africa via historical maritime trade routes. The Thai Ridgeback may be the ancestral form of the Rhodesian Ridgeback.

Thailand's dog population and the genetics of dog origins

In 2020, a research team led by Liangliang Zhang and Peter Savolainen at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, in collaboration with Chulalongkorn University and other Southeast Asian institutions, published a study in the journal Genes that analysed 528 base pairs of mitochondrial DNA from 265 dogs across Thailand. The finding was remarkable: Thailand was the only country in the world whose dog population carried the complete range of the universal canine mtDNA gene pool — all 10 sub-haplogroups, designated a1 through a6 and b1, b2, c1, and c2. Europe, despite its size, carries only 4 to 5 sub-haplogroups. Southwest Asia carries 5. Thailand, a country of 514,000 square kilometres, carries all 10.

This extraordinary diversity is concentrated particularly in northern Thailand, which showed the highest haplotype diversity of any region studied and the lowest proportion of derived (secondary) haplotypes — consistent with northern Thailand being, or being very close to, a primary origin zone of domestic dog genetic diversity. The finding aligns with previous Y-chromosome and nuclear genome studies pointing to Southeast Asia as the most likely origin point for domestic dog populations globally. The dogs of Thailand — the soi dogs sleeping in the shade of temple walls, the Bangkaews guarding boats on the Yom River, the Ridgebacks in the eastern forests — may be the closest living relatives of the dogs that first formed a bond with humans, somewhere in Southeast Asia, perhaps ten to fifteen thousand years ago.

The Aspin: Thailand's mixed-heritage street dog

Between the nationally recognised breeds and the entirely free-roaming street dog population lies a category that is perhaps the most genetically interesting of all: the Aspin, or Asian Spitz/primitive dog — the mixed-heritage Thai street dog of the kind that populates Bangkok's sois and provincial town markets. Lean, long-legged, typically short-coated, with alert prick ears and a natural ring tail, the Aspin is not a breed in any formal sense but a genetic type that has been shaped by Thailand's climate and ecology over many generations with minimal human intervention in its reproductive choices.

Urban Bangkok has developed a warm relationship with the Aspin over the past decade. Adoption campaigns led by the Soi Dog Foundation and local rescue organisations — including the Bangkok-based SCAD (Soi Cat and Dog) and dozens of independent rescue groups — have introduced thousands of Aspins into Bangkok family homes. The dogs adapt to domestic life readily, with an intelligence and resilience that reflects their street-dog heritage. Increasingly, the choice between an expensive imported pedigree dog and a rescue Aspin is not experienced by Bangkok's educated urban dog owners as a choice between quality and compromise — but as a choice between a dog shaped by European aesthetics and one shaped by Thailand itself.

Conservation and the genetic future

The Thai Ridgeback population remains small globally. The 2024 Biochemical Genetics study on Thai Ridgeback genetic diversity found that the current population has preserved significant genetic variation despite low numbers — a finding attributed to the active exchange of genetic material among breed owners and the relatively broad founding base in eastern Thailand. But small population size is always a conservation risk, and the Thai Ridgeback's international profile remains far below its genetic and historical significance.

For the Thai Bangkaew, the trajectory since Dr. Nisit's 1983 preservation programme has been steadily positive. The breed's FCI recognition in 2022 has brought international attention from dog breeders in Europe and North America who had not previously encountered it. The Thai Bangkaew Dog Club of America, founded in 2022, is pursuing AKC recognition. In Phitsanulok Province, Bangkaew breeders regard the breed's new international profile with justified pride: a dog that nearly vanished in the 1980s, saved by a veterinarian's determination and a village community's love for its local dogs, is now formally inscribed in the international canine record. The monk's gift to the monastery took a long and winding road.
