Type "gamot sa galis ng aso" into Facebook or TikTok in the Philippines and you'll find no shortage of home remedies, most of them unverified and some of them dangerous. Galis — the Tagalog term for mange — is genuinely one of the most common skin problems Filipino dog owners encounter, made worse by the country's hot, humid climate and the large population of community dogs (aspins) that mix with owned pets. But "galis" is actually an umbrella term covering at least two very different diseases with different causes, different diagnostic tests, and different treatments. Getting this distinction right — and getting a proper diagnosis — matters enormously for how quickly and safely your dog recovers.

Sarcoptic mange vs demodectic mange — they are not the same disease

Mange in dogs is caused by microscopic mites, but the two main types behave very differently. Sarcoptic mange (scabies) is caused by Sarcoptes scabiei mites that burrow into the skin, and it is intensely itchy and highly contagious between dogs through direct or indirect contact (shared bedding, grooming tools, close contact with an infested dog). Demodectic mange (demodicosis) is caused by Demodex mites that live in normal numbers in every dog's hair follicles without causing problems — disease occurs only when a dog's immune system, often because it is a puppy, immunosuppressed, or has an underlying illness, allows the mite population to overgrow. Demodectic mange is generally not contagious between dogs the way sarcoptic mange is, and localized demodicosis in puppies often resolves on its own, while generalized demodicosis needs veterinary treatment.

  • Sarcoptic mange: intensely itchy, highly contagious between dogs, often starts at the ears, elbows, and belly, can affect dogs of any age.
  • Demodectic mange: usually much less itchy (unless secondarily infected), generally not contagious between dogs, commonly seen in puppies (localized, patchy hair loss) or in adult dogs with an underlying health problem (generalized form).

How mange is actually diagnosed — skin scraping, not guesswork

A veterinarian diagnoses mange primarily through a deep skin scraping examined under a microscope, sometimes combined with a hair pluck (trichogram) for suspected demodicosis, since Demodex mites live deep in hair follicles. An important clinical nuance: sarcoptic mange mites are notoriously hard to find on skin scraping because they burrow deep and only a small number of mites can cause intense itching — so vets often make a presumptive diagnosis from the itch pattern and history, or use a therapeutic trial (a course of an appropriate, vet-prescribed anti-parasitic, with resolution of symptoms within a few weeks supporting the diagnosis). This is why a proper veterinary work-up, not a photo posted to a Facebook group, is the only reliable way to know which type of galis your dog has and how to treat it correctly.

Modern treatment — what your vet will likely prescribe

Veterinary treatment of mange has changed significantly in the past decade. A class of medications called isoxazolines (sold under various veterinary brand names as chewable tablets or spot-on treatments) has become the preferred treatment for both sarcoptic and demodectic mange in many cases, because a single correctly vet-prescribed treatment often resolves sarcoptic mange, and a monthly or extended-interval course can resolve demodectic mange under veterinary supervision. Your vet may also prescribe supportive treatments — medicated shampoos, antibiotics if there is secondary bacterial infection from scratching, or anti-inflammatory medication for comfort — depending on your dog's specific case. The ivermectin-misuse risk, explained

Ivermectin is a legitimate, effective anti-parasitic used in veterinary medicine, including — under a vet's supervision, at an appropriate dose and monitoring schedule — for some mange cases. The danger is specifically unsupervised, self-administered use: dosing by guesswork, using livestock or human formulations not intended for dogs, or not knowing your dog's individual sensitivity. A significant subset of dogs — most famously Collies, but also Australian Shepherds, Old English Sheepdogs, Shetland Sheepdogs, and their mixes — carry a mutation in the MDR1 gene that makes them far more sensitive to ivermectin's neurological effects than other dogs; affected dogs can react badly at a fraction of the dose that a normal dog tolerates. Since many Philippine community dogs (aspins) are mixed breed with unknown ancestry, there is no reliable way to rule out this sensitivity without genetic testing or a cautious, vet-supervised protocol. Folk remedies to avoid

Alongside ivermectin misuse, several folk remedies for galis circulate widely in Philippine online communities and even in some rural practice — none of these are evidence-based veterinary treatments, and several are actively harmful.

  • Used motor oil applied to the skin — can cause chemical irritation, block pores, and is toxic if licked off by the dog; does not treat the underlying mite infestation.
  • Battery acid or kerosene — corrosive, can cause severe chemical burns on already-compromised skin; never use.
  • Sulfur powder or sulfur-based home mixtures without veterinary guidance — sulfur has a legitimate history in veterinary dermatology in properly formulated, vet-directed products, but improvised home mixtures are not dosed or formulated safely and can irritate the skin further.

  • Human anti-fungal or anti-itch creams — mange is caused by mites, not fungus, so these products don't treat the underlying cause and may irritate a dog's skin or be harmful if licked.
