More Good Years: Inside Australia's Ageing Dog Population
Australian dogs are living longer than ever. The median lifespan of a pet dog has risen measurably over the past two decades, driven by better nutrition, earlier cancer detection, and a geriatric veterinary medicine that barely existed a generation ago. Here is what that means — and what it asks of us.
Oscar was eleven years old when his owner, a school teacher in the inner-western suburb of Balmain, noticed he was having trouble on stairs. Not refusing — Oscar had never refused anything, not in eleven years of insisting on daily walks along the Rozelle Bay foreshore — but slower, picking his way down the sandstone steps of their terrace with a deliberation that had not been there six months before. The vet found bilateral hip osteoarthritis. The prescription was not rest but rehabilitation: a physiotherapist who worked with dogs, hydrotherapy at a pool in Marrickville, a twice-daily meloxicam dose, and a change to a diet formulated for joint support. Oscar is fourteen now. He still does the Rozelle Bay foreshore. He just does it more slowly.
Oscar's story is, in an important sense, a story about Australian veterinary medicine in 2026. A generation ago, a dog showing significant osteoarthritis at eleven would probably have been euthanised within a year. Today, with access to the full toolkit of modern geriatric veterinary medicine — multimodal pain management, rehabilitation physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, dietary management, orthobiologics and, increasingly, novel anti-ageing interventions — that same dog has a realistic prospect of two or three more years of quality life. The question that veterinary science is now asking, in Australia and globally, is not how to add years to a dog's life. It is how to add quality to those years.
The numbers: how long do Australian dogs live?
The most comprehensive data on Australian dog lifespan comes from the VetCompass Australia programme — a joint initiative of the University of Sydney, the University of Queensland, and the University of Melbourne — which mines anonymised electronic health records from participating veterinary practices to generate population-level epidemiological data. Published VetCompass research and associated companion studies place median lifespan for dogs in Australia and comparable Western populations at approximately 11 to 12 years across all breeds combined — a figure broadly consistent with the UK VetCompass finding of 11.23 years from a 2022 Scientific Reports study by O'Neill DG and colleagues examining over 30,000 dogs.
Breed was the single most powerful predictor of longevity. At the long-lived end of the spectrum, Australian VetCompass data puts Miniature Schnauzers, Toy Poodles and Jack Russell Terriers at median lifespans of 13 to 15 years. At the short-lived end, French Bulldogs had a median of 9.1 years — a figure that reflects the cumulative burden of brachycephalic airway disease, spinal conditions, and skin fold dermatitis. Great Danes, Irish Wolfhounds and Bernese Mountain Dogs clustered around 7 to 8 years. Body size, as a general principle, remains the strongest single correlate of longevity across dog breeds: small dogs live longer. But the relationship is not deterministic, and within-breed variation is substantial.
These are population medians. Individual dogs may live considerably longer or shorter. Breed is a guide, not a sentence.
The three killers: what Australian dogs die of
VetCompass Australia data identifies three leading causes of death in Australian pet dogs: neoplasia (cancer), musculoskeletal disease, and neurological disease. Cancer is the leading cause of death in dogs over seven years of age — a statistic that has remained consistent across multiple national datasets and that mirrors findings from the US, UK and Europe. Approximately one in four dogs will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime; in Golden Retrievers and Bernese Mountain Dogs, some studies place the lifetime cancer risk above 60 percent.
Musculoskeletal disease — primarily osteoarthritis — is the leading cause of chronic pain and quality-of-life reduction in older Australian dogs, affecting an estimated 20 percent of dogs over one year of age and 80 percent of dogs over eight years. The gap between true prevalence and diagnosed prevalence is significant: published veterinary studies have consistently found that the majority of dogs with radiographic osteoarthritis have not been clinically identified prior to systematic examination, suggesting substantial underdiagnosis in routine practice.
Geriatric veterinary medicine: what has changed
The University of Sydney Faculty of Veterinary Science — one of three AVMA-accredited veterinary schools in Australia, alongside the University of Melbourne and the University of Queensland — began formalising geriatric veterinary medicine as a discipline in the early 2000s. Today, the Sydney School of Veterinary Science runs a dedicated small animal medicine programme with geriatric rotations, and the university's teaching hospital at the Camden campus offers specialist internal medicine, oncology, cardiology and neurology services — the full complement of specialist disciplines relevant to the ageing dog.
In Melbourne, the U-Vet Werribee Animal Hospital — the University of Melbourne's veterinary teaching hospital — operates specialist services in oncology, internal medicine and rehabilitation. The Melbourne Veterinary School has published research on osteoarthritis management, cognitive dysfunction syndrome, and end-of-life care standards that have influenced practice nationally. Private referral hospitals in both cities — the Small Animal Specialist Hospital (SASH) in Sydney's North Ryde, the Animal Referral Hospital (ARH) in Melbourne's Essendon and Sydney's Homebush — now offer oncology, cardiology, neurology, radiation therapy, and rehabilitation physiotherapy equivalent to specialist human hospital departments.
Cancer: the frontier of Australian veterinary oncology
Veterinary oncology in Australia has advanced rapidly. The introduction of stereotactic radiation therapy (SRT) at SASH in Sydney, and at other specialist centres, has made radiation a viable treatment option for canine tumours that were previously considered inoperable. SRT delivers high-dose, precisely targeted radiation to a tumour over one to five sessions rather than the 15 to 20 sessions required by conventional radiation — a significant quality-of-life advantage. Toceranib (Palladia), a tyrosine kinase inhibitor approved for use in dogs, has changed the management of mast cell tumours. Immunotherapy clinical trials are underway in Australia, led by the University of Queensland and in conjunction with the Morris Animal Foundation.
The global longevity research effort — including the Dog Aging Project at the University of Washington, which is recruiting 10,000 US dogs for a longitudinal study of ageing interventions, and Loyal's LOY-002 anti-ageing drug candidate, which received an FDA 'reasonable expectation of effectiveness' finding in February 2025 — is beginning to generate data applicable to the Australian context. Australian vets cannot yet access LOY-002, but the trial data will influence clinical thinking about rapamycin, senolytics and other ageing interventions in dogs as it matures.
Cognitive dysfunction syndrome: dementia in dogs
Canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS) — a neurodegenerative condition analogous to human Alzheimer's disease, characterised by amyloid-beta plaque deposition and progressive cognitive decline — affects an estimated 28 percent of dogs aged 11 to 12, and 68 percent of dogs aged 15 to 16, in studies conducted across multiple countries. Recognition in Australian general practice remains limited: a cross-sectional survey of Australian dog owners, conducted by researchers at the University of Sydney and published in The Veterinary Journal (Salvin HE et al., 2010), found that only 1.9 percent of owners with affected dogs had received a CDS diagnosis, despite a clinical prevalence estimated at many times that figure.
CDS is significantly underdiagnosed in Australian general practice. Owners who notice changes in sleep patterns, house-training, social interaction, or spatial orientation in an older dog should raise CDS with their vet.
End of life: the hardest gift
The growth of geriatric veterinary medicine in Australia has made the question of when to act — when to stop treating and allow a peaceful death — more complex. The availability of more interventions does not automatically mean that more intervention is always better. Australian veterinary ethicists, including researchers at the University of Melbourne's Centre for Animal Welfare and Ethics, have published work on the concept of a 'good death' for companion animals and on the tension between owner grief and animal welfare in end-of-life decisions. The dominant framework emerging from this literature is 'quality of life' assessment — structured tools such as the HHHHHMM scale (Hurt, Hunger, Hydration, Hygiene, Happiness, Mobility, More good days than bad) that help owners and vets make consistent, evidence-based judgements about when the balance has shifted.
What owners can do: the evidence-based list
The longevity literature converges on a reasonably consistent list of modifiable factors for Australian dog owners. Weight management is the intervention with the strongest evidence base: a Purina-funded 14-year study of Labrador Retrievers, published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, found that dogs maintained at lean body condition lived a median of 1.8 years longer than their littermates fed ad libitum. Exercise is beneficial across the lifespan but should be adapted as mobility declines — low-impact exercise (swimming, gentle lead walks on soft surfaces) replacing high-impact activity. Dental care, consistently undervalued by Australian owners, has independent associations with cardiovascular and renal health in older dogs. And biannual veterinary health screening from age seven enables early detection of the conditions — osteoarthritis, hypothyroidism, early renal disease, cardiac disease — that are most amenable to early intervention.
Oscar still does the Rozelle Bay foreshore. He goes slowly, stops often, and occasionally has to be encouraged past the sandstone steps he once bounded up without thought. But he goes. And the going — the nose-work of the tidal flat, the greeting of the people who have been greeting him for years, the structured pleasure of a walk that is, in its gentle way, still his — is, by any reasonable assessment, a good life. The science that makes that possible did not exist when he was young. It exists now. That is the achievement that geriatric veterinary medicine in Australia has been quietly building for twenty years.
