Whippet
Also known as: Snap Dog
A sleek, elegant sighthound - essentially a small Greyhound - that is gentle, quiet and affectionate indoors yet capable of explosive speed. Whippets are famously easygoing "couch sprinters": low grooming, low barking and content to lounge beside their owners, with one of the cleanest health records of any pedigree breed.
Origin and purpose
The Whippet was developed in 19th-century England, largely by working people, by refining small Greyhounds for rabbit coursing and "rag racing" (sprinting after a lure). The result is a compact sighthound built for acceleration — one of the fastest animals for its size.
Temperament
Kennel authorities describe the Whippet as gentle, affectionate, quiet and undemanding at home — a calm companion that rarely barks — paired with a strong chase instinct outdoors. It is sensitive and responds best to gentle training. Behaviour, as ever, is shaped far more by the individual dog than the breed label (Morrill et al., Science 2022).
Health and longevity
The Whippet is widely regarded as one of the soundest pedigree breeds, with relatively few inherited disorders. Sighthound-experienced veterinary anaesthesia is advisable.

Dogs must be microchipped, vaccinated and registered with your local council within 6 months of age. No breed-size restrictions on council registration, but strata/rental restrictions apply.

Climate & exercise in Sydney
Sydney is Temperate oceanic climate; warm summers (Dec–Feb, avg 26°C), mild winters; coastal humidity; no year-round tropical heat.. Exercise early morning or after 6pm in summer; avoid midday (Nov–Mar). Pavement heat test: if too hot for your hand 7 seconds, too hot for paws.. Brachycephalic breeds (French Bulldog, Pug, Bulldog) at elevated heatstroke risk in Sydney summers; limit outdoor time above 28°C. Watch for grass seeds (especially in outer suburbs) — can penetrate paw pads and ear canals.
Parasite prevention
Plan for Year-round heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) risk in greater Sydney; paralysis tick (Ixodes holocyclus) in bushland fringe suburbs and surrounds — monthly prevention essential. Brown dog tick present year-round..
