The Siberian Husky is an Arctic working dog of extraordinary endurance — bred by the Chukchi people of north-eastern Siberia to pull light loads at moderate speed across hundreds of kilometres of frozen tundra on minimal food. Lean, tireless, and deeply social within a pack, the Husky is a dog of paradoxes: famously friendly yet stubbornly independent; breathtakingly beautiful yet profoundly demanding. In urban settings it is one of the most popular breeds and simultaneously one of the least suitable — a combination that creates persistent welfare problems. Origin and history
The Chukchi people of the Chukotka Peninsula in north-eastern Siberia selectively bred the ancestors of the modern Siberian Husky for thousands of years. Their goal was a dog that could cover enormous distances at a steady trot, survive temperatures as low as −50 degrees Celsius, and thrive on a sparse diet of seal fat and fish. The Chukchi ran their teams in a fan hitch across open tundra, maximising the number of dogs in contact with solid ground — a configuration that shaped the breed's cooperative temperament and its deep need for companionship.
In 1908, fur trader William Goosak imported a team of Siberian dogs to Alaska to race in the All Alaska Sweepstakes. Locals initially dismissed the compact, light-framed dogs. The team finished third. The following year, Charles Fox Maule Ramsay imported a larger team and won. Leonhard Seppala subsequently became the preeminent breeder and racer of Siberian Huskies in Alaska, and his bloodline formed the foundation of the breed in North America.
The American Kennel Club formally recognised the Siberian Husky in 1930. The FCI placed it in Group 5 (Spitz and Primitive types) under Standard No. 270. Today the breed is among the most recognisable in the world — and is consistently over-acquired by owners whose lifestyle cannot support its needs.

Temperament
Siberian Huskies are, as a group, sociable and outgoing. They were bred to live in large packs and work closely with other dogs, and that heritage is evident: most are friendly toward strangers and rarely aggressive toward people. Serious aggression toward humans is atypical and should be investigated rather than accepted. However, the breed's pack instinct does not translate to human-directed obedience — Huskies are not bred to look to a handler for direction, and their biddability is genuinely low.
The behavioural challenges that cause Huskies to end up in rescue are well-documented and consistent: extreme independence, a powerful prey drive that makes off-lead recall unreliable (some owners describe it as non-existent), an almost legendary capacity for escape from gardens and yards, and a vocal repertoire — howling rather than barking — that strains relationships with neighbours. These are not failings of individual dogs; they are expressions of exactly what the breed was designed to do. They require specific management, not correction.
Huskies do form strong bonds with their households and can be affectionate and playful. They tend to be good with children when properly socialised, and coexist with other dogs reasonably well — though small animals are at significant risk given the prey drive. Alone time is not well tolerated; a bored, under-exercised Husky left alone is a recipe for destructive behaviour and distress.
Health and longevity
The Siberian Husky is a generally robust breed. AKC and breed-club literature cites a typical lifespan of 12-14 years. UK VetCompass surveillance data from McMillan et al. (2024, Scientific Reports) - the largest peer-reviewed dog longevity dataset in the world - places median life expectancy at birth at approximately 9.53 years across all Huskies in the study population. The VetCompass figure is lower than breed-club estimates partly because it captures the real-world population, including dogs with preventable welfare issues, insufficient exercise and climate stress.
The breed's primary inherited health vulnerabilities centre on the eyes, hips, skin and neurological function. None of these is universal, and responsible breeding with appropriate health testing substantially reduces risk.
Common health conditions
Exercise and enrichment
A healthy adult Siberian Husky requires a minimum of two hours of vigorous physical exercise per day — not a brief walk, but sustained aerobic activity. In their intended environment this means running, pulling, or covering long distances at pace. In a domestic setting it means extended runs, long hikes, bikejoring, canicross, or similar sustained activities. Anything less leaves a significant physical and psychological need unmet.
Enrichment is as important as physical exercise. Huskies are cognitively active dogs; puzzle feeders, scent work, nosework classes and training sessions provide mental stimulation that helps prevent the destructive behaviours that accompany boredom. A tired Husky is a good Husky is the standard advice in breed circles — but tiredness must come from appropriate activity, not from confinement.
Grooming
The Siberian Husky carries a dense double coat consisting of a soft, insulating undercoat and a longer, coarser outer guard coat. This coat is self-cleaning to a reasonable degree and odour is typically low — but shedding is prodigious. Twice a year, usually in spring and autumn, Huskies undergo a dramatic coat blow lasting three to six weeks during which the undercoat sheds in dense clumps. During this period daily brushing is essential; without it the dead coat mats and traps heat against the skin, which is both uncomfortable and counterproductive for temperature regulation.
Outside of coat blow, weekly brushing with a slicker brush and an undercoat rake is sufficient for most Huskies. Bathing is required infrequently — three to four times per year in most cases, or when genuinely dirty. Because the coat is so dense, thorough drying after bathing is essential to prevent fungal skin issues.

Training
Training a Siberian Husky requires honesty about what the breed was designed to do and what it was not. Huskies were bred to run in a team, make independent decisions on terrain and conditions, and keep moving — not to look at a handler for cues, stop on command, or remain stationary. Their selective breeding history is the opposite of the herding or gun-dog breeds from which most popular training frameworks derive.
This does not mean Huskies cannot be trained — they can learn an extensive range of behaviours with patient, positive-reinforcement-based methods and high-value reinforcement. What it means is that certain behaviours are genuinely difficult for the breed. Reliable off-lead recall is the most consequential: many experienced Husky owners and trainers are frank that a solid off-lead recall in the presence of prey-type stimuli is unachievable for most individuals. The practical implication is that the Husky must be managed on-lead or in secure enclosures — it cannot be recalled out of a chase in the way a well-trained Labrador might be.
Positive methods work best: reward-based training, short frequent sessions, and motivating the dog through food, play and drive-based rewards. Aversive or punishment-based approaches are both unnecessary and counterproductive with this breed, increasing frustration and potentially eroding trust. Puppy classes and early socialisation are important for building the foundation, but owners should begin with realistic expectations.
Nutrition
The Siberian Husky has one of the most metabolically efficient digestive systems of any domestic breed — a direct inheritance from a working existence in which dogs needed to run extraordinary distances on minimal caloric input. Racing Huskies are documented to sustain metabolic rates many times baseline for extended periods in ways that challenge basic mammalian physiology; the breed's cellular energy management is genuinely unusual.
In a pet dog context this efficiency means obesity is uncommon when the dog is adequately exercised — but it also means energy intake should be calibrated to actual activity level. A Husky confined to an apartment with insufficient exercise is not burning the calories it was designed to process; monitoring body condition score and adjusting portions accordingly is important.
Protein quality matters. A diet with a named meat protein as the first ingredient, appropriate fat content for activity level, and adequate zinc (noting the breed's predisposition to zinc-absorption issues) is appropriate for most adults. Puppies should be fed a complete puppy food from a reputable manufacturer. Any dog showing skin changes, coat issues or lethargy should have a veterinary assessment before dietary changes are made — self-diagnosis of zinc-responsive dermatosis is not recommended.
Health screening
Five health areas are the focus of responsible Husky breeding programmes. Three have DNA tests that can be performed at any age on a cheek swab; two require physical examination and imaging.
cord1-PRA (progressive retinal atrophy, cord1 mutation)
- What it is: a hereditary degeneration of the photoreceptor cells in the retina, leading to progressive vision loss and eventual blindness
- Inheritance: autosomal recessive — a dog must inherit two copies of the mutant allele (homozygous affected) to develop the disease; carriers (one copy) are clinically normal but can pass the mutation to offspring
- DNA test: OptiGen cord1-PRA test (also offered by multiple accredited veterinary genetics laboratories); identifies Clear, Carrier or Affected status
- Relevance to buyers: ask for DNA test results from both parents; ideally both are Clear or at minimum one parent is Clear (preventing any pup from being Affected)

Hereditary cataracts (HSF4 / HC-HSF4)
- What it is: juvenile or early adult-onset cataracts arising from a mutation in the HSF4 gene; distinct from age-related cataracts
- Inheritance: autosomal recessive in the Husky (though inheritance pattern differs by breed)
- DNA test: available from OFA, Embark, Animal Genetics and other accredited laboratories
- Annual eye examination: the Canine Eye Registry Foundation (CAER) examination by a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist remains the gold standard for breeding stock — DNA tests identify the HSF4 mutation but do not replace clinical evaluation for all heritable eye conditions in this breed
- Corneal dystrophy and other heritable eye conditions in Huskies are not covered by the HSF4 test alone; annual CAER exams detect these
Hip dysplasia
- What it is: abnormal development of the hip joint, leading to instability, pain and osteoarthritis
- Diagnosis: radiographic evaluation under the OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) or PennHIP scheme; preliminary assessment from 12 months, official OFA certification from 24 months
- OFA data: approximately 12% of Huskies submitted for OFA evaluation are graded dysplastic; this is lower than many large breeds
- Breeding recommendation: use only OFA Fair/Good/Excellent or PennHIP-certified animals for breeding
Zinc-responsive dermatosis
- What it is: a heritable impairment of intestinal zinc absorption causing crusting, scaling and hair loss around the muzzle, eyes, ears and pressure points
- Diagnosis: clinical assessment by a veterinary dermatologist; skin biopsy may be used to confirm
- Management: zinc supplementation under veterinary supervision; affected dogs typically respond well but may require lifelong management
- No DNA test currently available; buyers should ask breeders about lineage history
Idiopathic epilepsy
- What it is: recurring seizures of no identified structural or metabolic cause; believed to have a heritable component in the Husky
- Diagnosis: exclusion of other causes (metabolic panel, MRI, CSF analysis in complex cases)
- No validated DNA test currently available
- Breeders should avoid breeding dogs with a personal or close family history of seizure disorder
Choosing a puppy
Beyond health documentation, meet both parents if possible. Observe the litter's environment: puppies should be raised in a home environment with human contact from birth, not kennelled in a shed. The dam should be calm, friendly and accessible; be cautious if breeders make excuses for why you cannot meet her. Ask about socialisation protocols — what sounds, surfaces and social experiences have the puppies been exposed to?
Avoid pet shops, online marketplaces that cannot connect you to the breeder directly, or any source that has multiple breeds available simultaneously — these are hallmarks of commercial puppy farming, which generates significant preventable health and behavioural problems. Cross-reference the breeder with your national kennel club or licensing authority. Consider whether adoption from a Husky rescue organisation is appropriate — given how frequently the breed is surrendered, adults in rescue are common.

Manila is tropical maritime; three seasons — warm dry (March–May, 32–38°C), rainy (June–November, typhoon season), cool dry (December–February, 22–28°C); Metro Manila hottest March–May; year-round tropical humidity. walk before 7:30am or after 6pm year-round; March–May peak heat is dangerous — limit walks to before 7am; pavement in direct sun reaches 55°C+ at midday; Manila urban heat island intensifies early-afternoon temperatures. Metro Manila's tropical heat peaks March–May (32–38°C) with extreme humidity — heatstroke risk is highest during this period for all dogs, and genuinely dangerous for brachycephalic breeds (French Bulldog, Pug, Shih Tzu, Bulldog) at any time outside the early-morning window. Typhoon season (June–November) brings flooding in low-lying barangays — leptospirosis from floodwater contact is a documented risk for Manila dogs. Annual rabies vaccination is a legal requirement under the Anti-Rabies Act of 2007; any animal bite in the Philippines requires immediate medical attention and post-exposure prophylaxis at the nearest Animal Bite Treatment Center (ABTC).
Parasite prevention
Plan for year-round heartworm prevention essential (Culex and Aedes mosquitoes active all 12 months; typhoon season June–November dramatically increases mosquito breeding habitat); tick-borne disease (Ehrlichia canis, Babesia canis/gibsoni) high risk year-round — Rhipicephalus sanguineus endemic in Metro Manila residential areas; annual rabies vaccination legally required under RA 9482 (Philippines is NOT rabies-free); leptospirosis risk during and after flooding (June–November typhoon season) — keep dogs away from floodwater.
