Whippet
Also known as: Snap Dog
A sleek, elegant sighthound - essentially a small Greyhound - that is gentle, quiet and affectionate indoors yet capable of explosive speed. Whippets are famously easygoing "couch sprinters": low grooming, low barking and content to lounge beside their owners, with one of the cleanest health records of any pedigree breed.
Origin and purpose
The Whippet was developed in 19th-century England, largely by working people, by refining small Greyhounds for rabbit coursing and "rag racing" (sprinting after a lure). The result is a compact sighthound built for acceleration — one of the fastest animals for its size.
Temperament
Kennel authorities describe the Whippet as gentle, affectionate, quiet and undemanding at home — a calm companion that rarely barks — paired with a strong chase instinct outdoors. It is sensitive and responds best to gentle training. Behaviour, as ever, is shaped far more by the individual dog than the breed label (Morrill et al., Science 2022).
Health and longevity
The Whippet is widely regarded as one of the soundest pedigree breeds, with relatively few inherited disorders. Sighthound-experienced veterinary anaesthesia is advisable.

Climate & exercise in Penang
Penang is equatorial island; hot and humid year-round (26–34°C); North-East Monsoon (Nov–Mar) and South-West Monsoon (May–Sep); Penang Hill reaches 833m with noticeably cooler temperatures. walk before 8:30am or after 6pm on the coast; Penang Hill and Botanical Garden trails are cooler due to canopy cover — even so, avoid midday. Penang's island geography and forested hills create tick habitat that is more diverse than KL's urban environment. Skin-fold and ear infection risk elevated during humid monsoon months. Heatstroke danger is similar to KL — coastal heat island effect on George Town's heritage streets is intense in the afternoon.
Parasite prevention
Plan for year-round heartworm prevention essential; two monsoon seasons cause mosquito population surges post-rainfall; tick-borne disease (Ehrlichia canis, Babesia species) high risk — forested areas including Penang Hill and Teluk Bahang Forest Park have significant tick habitat; leptospirosis risk increases post-monsoon flooding.
