Newfoundland
Also known as: Newfie, Newf
A massive, sweet-natured water dog famed for its strength, swimming ability and profound devotion to children - the archetypal "gentle giant." Newfoundlands are calm, patient and deeply affectionate, with a trustworthy nature and a joyful love of the water that makes them extraordinary family companions.
Origin and purpose
The Newfoundland developed on Canada's Atlantic coast as a working dog for fishermen — hauling nets, carrying lines and famously rescuing people from the water, aided by its strength, webbed feet and water-resistant coat. It was refined into the modern breed largely in 19th-century Britain.
Temperament
Kennel authorities describe the Newfoundland as sweet-tempered, devoted, patient and trustworthy — so reliable with children it earned the "nanny dog" reputation, and calm and sociable by nature. It is intelligent and trainable but slow to mature. Of course, individual temperament varies far more than breed alone predicts (Morrill et al., Science 2022).
Health and longevity
The Newfoundland carries several heritable conditions. Buy from breeders who cardiac-screen and test hips, elbows and for cystinuria.

Licensing
DBKL dog licence required for KL addresses (Local Government Act 1976): ~RM 10–50/year depending on breed and sterilisation status; annual rabies vaccination required. Surrounding Selangor areas: MBPJ (PJ), MBSA (Shah Alam). Source: DBKL; DVS Malaysia.
Climate & exercise in Penang
Penang is equatorial; hot and humid year-round (28–35°C); two monsoon seasons (SW: May–Sep, NE: Nov–Mar); no cold season; daily humidity above 70%. walk before 8:30am or after 6pm; pavement in direct sun reaches 50°C+ at midday; the 10-second hand test applies. KL humidity year-round raises risk of skin-fold dermatitis, hot spots and ear infections; heatstroke is a constant danger for brachycephalic breeds (French Bulldog, Bulldog, Pug, Shih Tzu) and double-coated breeds (Husky, Chow Chow) — midday exercise outdoors is genuinely dangerous.
Parasite prevention
Plan for year-round heartworm prevention essential (Culex and Aedes mosquitoes active all 12 months); tick-borne disease (Ehrlichia canis, Babesia canis/gibsoni) is high risk year-round — brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus) endemic across KL residential areas.

Health & longevity
Responsible breeders health-test their breeding dogs. Ask to see current certificates before committing.
Nutrition note: Giant-breed controlled-growth puppy diet; keep lean; multiple smaller meals reduce bloat risk.
