Saint Bernard

The legendary alpine rescue dog of the Great St Bernard Hospice - a gentle, patient giant that is wonderful with children and famously good-natured. Calm, devoted and deeply affectionate, the Saint Bernard is a warm-hearted gentle giant with a heritage as extraordinary as its personality.
Origin and purpose
The Saint Bernard was developed by monks at the Great St Bernard Hospice in the Swiss Alps from the 18th century as a powerful, sure-footed dog to find and rescue travellers lost in the snow. The breed became a symbol of mountain rescue, with the famous dog Barry credited with saving many lives.
Temperament
Breed authorities describe the Saint Bernard as friendly, calm, patient and gentle — exceptionally tolerant with children and steady in temperament. It is moderate in energy and trainable, though early manners training matters given the eventual size. As ever, behaviour reflects the individual dog and its raising far more than the breed (Morrill et al., Science 2022).
Health and longevity
Giant size brings a short lifespan and predisposition to several heritable conditions. Buy from breeders who screen hips, elbows, heart and eyes.

Climate & exercise in Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur is equatorial; hot and humid year-round (28–35°C); two monsoon seasons (SW: May–Sep, NE: Nov–Mar); no cold season; daily humidity above 70%. walk before 8:30am or after 6pm; pavement in direct sun reaches 50°C+ at midday; the 10-second hand test applies. KL humidity year-round raises risk of skin-fold dermatitis, hot spots and ear infections; heatstroke is a constant danger for brachycephalic breeds (French Bulldog, Bulldog, Pug, Shih Tzu) and double-coated breeds (Husky, Chow Chow) — midday exercise outdoors is genuinely dangerous.
Parasite prevention
Plan for year-round heartworm prevention essential (Culex and Aedes mosquitoes active all 12 months); tick-borne disease (Ehrlichia canis, Babesia canis/gibsoni) is high risk year-round — brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus) endemic across KL residential areas.
