Whippet
Also known as: Snap Dog
A sleek, elegant sighthound - essentially a small Greyhound - that is gentle, quiet and affectionate indoors yet capable of explosive speed. Whippets are famously easygoing "couch sprinters": low grooming, low barking and content to lounge beside their owners, with one of the cleanest health records of any pedigree breed.
Origin and purpose
The Whippet was developed in 19th-century England, largely by working people, by refining small Greyhounds for rabbit coursing and "rag racing" (sprinting after a lure). The result is a compact sighthound built for acceleration — one of the fastest animals for its size.
Temperament
Kennel authorities describe the Whippet as gentle, affectionate, quiet and undemanding at home — a calm companion that rarely barks — paired with a strong chase instinct outdoors. It is sensitive and responds best to gentle training. Behaviour, as ever, is shaped far more by the individual dog than the breed label (Morrill et al., Science 2022).
Health and longevity
The Whippet is widely regarded as one of the soundest pedigree breeds, with relatively few inherited disorders. Sighthound-experienced veterinary anaesthesia is advisable.

Climate & exercise in Johor Bahru
Johor Bahru is equatorial; hot and humid year-round (27–34°C); similar climate to Singapore 1km across the Tebrau Strait; sea breeze at Danga Bay provides relief in mornings and evenings. walk before 8:30am or at Danga Bay waterfront from 5:30pm where sea breeze is consistent; avoid midday — pavement surfaces reach 50°C+ in direct sun. JB's equatorial climate is essentially identical to Singapore's — year-round heat and humidity, with heatstroke risk for brachycephalic and double-coated breeds at any time outside the early-morning window. Parasite prevention
Plan for year-round heartworm and tick prevention essential; peri-urban areas (Tebrau, Tampoi, Skudai) adjacent to palm oil plantation and secondary forest have high tick density; Ehrlichia canis and Babesia species documented across Johor; leptospirosis risk in flood-prone residential drains.
