Also known as: Hungarian Vizsla, Magyar Vizsla, Hungarian Pointer

A lean, elegant golden-rust Hungarian pointer-retriever - affectionate, intensely people-bonded and bursting with athletic energy. Vizslas are nicknamed "velcro dogs" for their closeness to their owners, combining a short, low-maintenance coat with a loving, gentle disposition and a deep commitment to their family.

Origin and purpose

The Vizsla is an ancient Hungarian sporting breed, developed as an all-round pointer and retriever that worked closely with the hunter. The breed nearly disappeared around the World Wars and was revived by dedicated Hungarian breeders, becoming popular internationally for its versatility and affectionate nature.

Temperament

Kennel authorities describe the Vizsla as gentle, affectionate, energetic and highly trainable, exceptionally attached to its people — hence the "velcro dog" nickname. It is sensitive and does not cope well with isolation or harsh handling. Individual temperament, as always, depends far more on the dog and its raising than on the breed label (Morrill et al., Science 2022).

Health and longevity

The Vizsla is considered one of the healthier sporting breeds. Buy from breeders who screen hips and eyes and breed for sound temperament.

Common health conditions

Abnormal hip joint development occurs occasionally in the breed. OFA hip evaluation of both parents is recommended before breeding. Maintaining a lean body condition and avoiding excessive exercise in growing puppies reduces the severity of joint disease.
