Origin & history

The name says it plainly: Dachs = badger, Hund = dog. Hunting records and iconography suggest a short-legged, elongated German scenting hound used for den work from at least the 15th century, with more formal breed development consolidated through the 17th and 18th centuries. The standard Dachshund (Normalgrosse) was bred primarily for badger work and can weigh up to approximately 9 kg under FCI standards. The Miniature Dachshund — Zwergteckel in German — was refined to a chest circumference of no more than 35 cm (FCI standard), originally to pursue rabbit and smaller quarry through narrower underground passages. Three coat varieties evolved in parallel to suit different terrain and climate: the smooth-coated (the oldest and most widely kept), the longhaired (believed to carry spaniel influence for heavier woodland country), and the wirehaired (developed from rough-coated terrier crosses for dense undergrowth).

The FCI classifies the Dachshund in Group 4 (Dachshunds), FCI no. 148, distinguishing standard, miniature and rabbit sizes across all three coat types — nine varieties in total. The AKC treats all sizes and coats as a single breed. The Kennel Club (UK) registers each of the six smooth/long/wire × standard/miniature combinations as a separate breed. The hunting lineage is evident in a strong prey drive, marked independence, and a dog that will follow a scent with little regard for handler instructions — a trait that served it well underground and causes recall failures in open spaces. Vocality is a characteristic of the breed: the Dachshund was bred to locate prey underground and bay to indicate its position, and this baying instinct survives domestication as a propensity to bark, sometimes prolifically, at sounds through windows, at strangers, and at other dogs. An important caveat on breed-level behavioural claims: the landmark 2022 study by Morrill et al. The remaining variance is individual — shaped by genetics within the breed, early experience, socialisation, and training history. Training

Dachshunds respond well to positive reinforcement methods — high-value food rewards, short sessions and precise marking of desired behaviour. The breed is typically food-motivated, which is both an asset and a metabolic risk to manage. Coercion and repetitive drilling are counterproductive: a bored or pressured Dachshund disengages entirely. The combination of intelligence and hound independence means the dog learns quickly what it wants to learn and ignores instructions it deems irrelevant; the trainer's job is to make the desired behaviour the most interesting option available.

Recall is the most critical and most challenging skill for this breed.   • Smooth coat: the lowest-maintenance variety. A weekly brush with a rubber curry comb or soft bristle brush removes loose hair and distributes skin oils. Bathe every 4–6 weeks or as needed. In hot, humid climates, check for skin fold moisture retention and hot spots in active dogs.

Common health conditions

IVDD is the dominant welfare issue of the breed and one of the most prevalent breed-specific health problems in all of canine medicine. The Miniature Dachshund is a chondrodystrophic breed: it carries an FGF4 retrogene insertion on chromosome 18 that produces premature calcification of the nucleus pulposus of the intervertebral discs, beginning from approximately two years of age (Brown et al., PLOS Genetics, 2017 — GWAS identifying FGF4-Chr18 as the primary chondrodystrophy locus). In non-chondrodystrophic breeds, the disc nucleus remains gel-like and resilient throughout most of the dog's life. In Dachshunds, it mineralises and loses its shock-absorbing capacity. Calcified discs are prone to Hansen Type I herniation — explosive rupture of mineralised disc material into the spinal canal, compressing the spinal cord.

The lifetime risk is well-established: approximately 25% of Miniature Dachshunds will experience a clinically significant IVDD episode, a figure consistent across multiple independent studies (Parker & Meurs, JAVMA, 2004; Bergknut et al., Veterinary Journal, 2013). The thoracolumbar junction (T11–L3) is the most common site, accounting for the majority of Dachshund IVDD cases, though cervical disc disease also occurs. Grade III and above: surgical decompression (hemilaminectomy) is recommended, with good outcomes when performed promptly. What is IVDD and how serious is it in Dachshunds?

Intervertebral disc disease is a condition in which one or more of the cushioning discs between the vertebrae ruptures or bulges into the spinal canal, compressing the spinal cord. In Dachshunds, the breed's FGF4 retrogene causes premature disc calcification from approximately age 2 (Brown et al., PLOS Genetics, 2017), making Hansen Type I herniation far more likely than in most breeds. Roughly 25% of Miniature Dachshunds will have a significant IVDD episode in their lifetime (Parker & Meurs, JAVMA, 2004). How do I recognise a disc episode? What should I look for?

Warning signs range from subtle to catastrophic: sudden back arching or hunched posture; yelping when touched along the spine or when picked up; reluctance to move, jump, climb or descend; a tucked or guarded abdomen; a stiff, stilted walk; hindlimb wobble or crossing of the back legs (ataxia); one or both hind paws knuckling under when walking; the dog dragging one or both hindlimbs; loss of bladder or bowel control. If you see hindlimb weakness, knuckling or any loss of bladder/bowel control, treat it as an emergency and go to a vet or emergency animal hospital immediately — do not wait to see if it improves.

Should I really use ramps everywhere?

Yes, without exception. The force transmitted to the intervertebral discs when a long-backed, short-legged dog lands from a jump — sofa, bed, or car — is biomechanically disproportionate to its body size. Ramps eliminate this loading event. Most Miniature Dachshunds learn to use ramps readily, especially if introduced from 8 weeks. Many owners reflect after a first IVDD episode that they wish they had installed ramps before the dog arrived. The ramps are not for after a problem — they are the prevention.

Do Dachshunds need a special diet?

Not a "special" diet per se — a standard complete dog food meeting AAFCO or FEDIAF nutritional adequacy standards is appropriate. The discipline is in the quantity and the consistency of portion control. The breed's obesity predisposition combined with the direct mechanical consequence of excess weight on the spine means strict measured feeding twice daily, and no free-feeding, is non-negotiable. Can a Dachshund swim? Is swimming safe for their back?

Swimming is one of the best exercises available to a Miniature Dachshund. The water supports body weight, eliminating the compressive disc loading of ground-based impact while allowing free movement of the limbs and back. Swimming and water treadmill hydrotherapy are used both preventively — to condition the back musculature — and therapeutically after IVDD events. Most Dachshunds take to water readily. Are there different coat types, and does it matter which I choose?

The three coat varieties — smooth, longhaired and wirehaired — differ in grooming demand and, to a small extent, in typical temperament (the wirehaired is often described as slightly more terrier-like). They do not differ in IVDD risk or any major health predisposition. Choose by grooming commitment and aesthetic preference. In hot, humid climates, the smooth coat requires the least grooming maintenance; the longhaired coat can mat rapidly without regular brushing.

What does "double dapple" mean and why is it a concern?

"Dapple" is the Dachshund term for the merle colour pattern, produced by the M-locus allele. A double dapple results from mating two dapple dogs. Puppies that inherit two copies of the merle allele (MM) have a very high incidence of congenital deafness, small eyes (microphthalmia), absent eyes (anophthalmia) and blindness. This is condemned by all veterinary bodies and responsible breed clubs. Double-dapple puppies can be identified by large, irregular white patches on the coat and face. Never purchase one.
